No. 1 Walters State wins 43rd game of the season; defeats Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN – No. 1 Walters State scored five runs in the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon to end the Senators matchup with Cleveland State early, 9-1 in seven innings.

With the win, Walters State completed the sweep over the Cougars and improved to 43-3 overall and 19-1 in TCCAA play. It was their 23rd straight win.

Wesley Scott got the start on the mound for Walters State and picked up his sixth win of the season with four innings of work. Scott allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven.

Geo Rivera picked up his second save of the season with a three-inning relief appearance, allowing no hits and striking out four.

At the plate, leadoff hitter Caleb McNeely hit his 18th home run of the season and scored three times. Along with McNeely, Noah Gent had three hits while Colby Backus and Kory Klingenbeck each knocked in two runs.

The Senators started things quick on Saturday with a run just three batters in as Backus singled home McNeely. Walters State then added two more in the third to make it 3-0 as Backus scored on a passed ball and Andrew Ott reached on a fielder's choice that scored Gent.

In the fourth, McNeely increased the lead to 4-0 with his solo home run. The Cougars would then get on the board for the first time all weekend with a run in the bottom of the fourth that made it 4-1.

Following two scoreless innings, the Senators closed the game out with a five spot in the top of the seventh. Klingenbeck started things off with a two-RBI single before McNeely reached on a fielder's choice that scored Ott. The final two runs of the inning came on an error that scored Klingenbeck and a fielder's choice from Gent that drove in McNeely.
