Shaw, Reid homer Senators past Chipola, Wallace-Dothan

MARIANNA, FL – Corbin Shaw hit a home run in both games on Sunday afternoon while Kurtis Reid hit two in the second game alone and drove in seven runs as No. 2 Walters State defeated No. 10 Chipola, 9-2, and Wallace-Dothan, 9-5.

With the wins, the Senators moved to 8-1 on the season.

Through nine games, Shaw now has two home runs and 16 runs knocked in while Reid has two home runs and 10 RBIs.

GAME ONE: No. 2 Walters State 9, No. 10 Chipola 2

In game one of the day, the Senators scored four runs from the first four batters of the game and were off from there on their way to the win.

Caleb Marmo led things off with a double before Cooper Torres singled him to third. Kruise Newman made it 1-0 with an RBI single and it was soon 4-0 as Shaw belted a three-run homer.

Walters State held that lead until the fifth when Marmo singled and Torres followed with a two-run home run to make it 6-0. The Senators weren't done in the inning as Newman walked and then scored when Deniel Ortiz hit a two-run homer to make it 8-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Chipola tried to get back into the game as they loaded the bases with one out before driving in a run. Taz Butler replaced Landon Crumbley on the mound after that for the Senators and gave up a run but got the final two outs to get out of the jam and keep the score at 8-2.

The Senators added one more run in the game in the seventh as Cole McCallum walked with the bases loaded to score Marmo.

Crumbley (3-0) got the start for Walters State on the mound and picked up the win. Crumbley threw 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four. Butler pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out three.

At the plate for Walters State, Marmo, Torres and Ortiz each had two hits in the game while Newman had a hit and walked twice. Shaw led the way with three RBIs while Torres and Ortiz each drove in two runs.

GAME TWO: No. 2 Walters State 9, Wallace-Dothan 5

In game two, Reid was the star with two 3-run homers and seven RBIs as Walters State held on for the win.

Shaw got things going once again with his second home run of the day, this one a two-run homer in the first inning. Walters State added three more in the inning when Reid hit a three-run bomb that put the Senators in front, 5-0.

Wallace-Dothan answered with a solo shot in the top of the second, but Walters State got the run back in the bottom of the third when Reid singled home McCallum.

Wallace scored twice in the fourth that cut the lead to 6-3 and then threatened to take the lead in the fifth after loading the bases with two outs and driving in two more runs with an RBI single. However, Brayden Matthews entered on the mound for the Senators and got the final out to preserve Walters State's 6-5 lead.

Clinging to the one-run lead, the Senators got insurance in the bottom of the fifth as Reid capped off his unreal game with his second three-run homer to make it 9-5.

Landon Slemp (1-1) got the start on the mound and threw 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. Bradley Gagen replaced Slemp with one out in the fourth and threw 1.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits while striking out three.

Matthews pitched the final 2.1 innings and didn't give up a run or hit, striking out two.

At the plate, Torres and McCallum had two hits while Reid was 3-for-3 and drove in seven runs.
