Lady Senators complete four-game sweep of Green Jays

JACKSON, Tenn. — Walters State allowed just four runs in its weekend series at Jackson State, including three straight shutouts, two of which came on Monday afternoon in completing the four-game series sweep on the road in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play.

 

The Lady Senators went the final 23 innings of the series not allowing a run, as Walters State posted a 7-0 win in the opening game of Monday's twinbill before tallying an 8-0 win in six innings in the finale to close out the sweep.

 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators moved to .500 on the season at 10-10 overall while boosting their TCCAA ledger to 4-2 on the year.

 

The losses dropped the Green Jays to 7-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.

 

In the opener, Lauren Brickey (2-1) went all seven innings and scattered three hits in posting her first shutout of the season. In the finale, Delilah Malczewski (4-4) tossed her second shutout of the series, as she also allowed just three hits in the six-inning contest. Malczewski tossed 13 scoreless frames in the series.

 

In the first game of the day, the Lady Senators scored a single run in the first and second innings, two more in the third, two again in the sixth and one final run in the seventh to complete the 7-0 victory.

 

Taylor McConnell posted three hits in the win, while Sydney Dukes and Emily Whitaker both added two hits with a double and two RBIs and Keeley Quillen had two hits and an RBI on her fourth homer of the season. Emma Seagrave added two hits with a run batted in, while Jenica Brown and Brickey both added singes and Sydney Fox drove in a run in the victory.

 

In the series finale, the game was scoreless through three innings before the Lady Senators scored a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before delivering the knockout blow with a four-run sixth inning to end the game by the mercy rule.

 

Mia Edwardson smacked two hits with her fifth round tripper of the year, as she finished with two RBIs in the win. Whitaker added a pair of doubles with an RBI, while Kallyn Newport had two hits as well in the contest. Taylor McConnell added a single with two runs knocked in, and Regan Miller tagged a three-run double. Brown, Dukes, Kristen Hall and Lexi McDowell each added a base hit in the victory.

 

The Lady Senators will be back in action at home Tuesday afternoon when they host Edison State at the Walters State Softball Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
