Lady Senators remain unbeaten with doubleheader sweep of Georgia Highlands

ROME, GA – Walters State continued their impressive start to the season on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader over Georgia Highlands with an 8-0 win and 11-1 win. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 10-0 on the season.

 

GAME ONE: Walters State 8, Georgia Highlands 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Tori Coffman walked one and didn't allow a hit as the Lady Senators cruised to the victory. 

 

Coffman (5-0) threw all five innings and struck out six. Coffman now has 38 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched and an ERA well under one. 

 

At the plate, Kasey Bennett had two hits, including her fourth home run of the season, and drove in four runs. Kailey Dixon, Jules Johnson, Tatum Dye, Brianna Beech and Ava Brooks each had two hits as well while Johnson hit her second home run of the season. 

 

The Lady Senators totaled 14 hits in the game. 

 

Following a scoreless first inning, the Lady Senators got on the board in the top of the second with a leadoff home run by Johnson. Walters State made it 2-0 in the top of the third when Bennett hit a sacrifice fly that scored Brooks. 

 

The Lady Senators broke the game open in the fourth with six runs. Beech started things off with a two-RBI double to score Dye and Johnson before Beech scored to make it 5-0. It was 8-0 just three batters later as Bennett launched a home run over the fence in center. 

 

Coffman struck out two in the bottom of the fifth to close things out. 

 

GAME TWO: Walters State 11, Georgia Highlands 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, it was Ashley Milligan's turn to dominate in the circle as she struck out nine in five innings of work to lead Walters State to the win. 

 

Milligan (5-0) allowed just three hits in the contest. The only run came on a solo home run with two outs in the fifth. 

 

Offensively, Bennett and Johnson both hit homers for the second straight game while Beech was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Dye had three hits, as well. 

 

The Lady Senators started things off just two batters in as Bennett launched a solo home run over the fence in center. Four batters later, it was 3-0 as Beech doubled home Halle Laramie and Dye. 

 

In the third, the Lady Senators added to their lead as Beech singled to score Johnson. Walters State scored twice more in the third to make it 6-0 as Brooks scored Beech on a fielder's choice and Sarah King scored on an error. 

 

In the fourth after Bennett walked to lead off the inning, Johnson drove her in with a two-run homer to make it 8-0. The final three runs came in the fifth as Dixon doubled home a run and Dye singled home both Dixon and Johnson.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday as they travel to take on Spartanburg Methodist for two games. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. with the second game to follow after.
