Fifth-ranked Lady Senators drop doubleheader to Chattanooga State

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 5 Walters State fell twice on Saturday to Chattanooga State. The Lady Senators lost 8-2 in game one and 10-4 in game two. 

 

With the losses, the Lady Senators fell to 27-5 overall and 17-3 in TCCAA play.

 

GAME ONE: Chattanooga State 8, No. 5 Walters State 2

 

In game one, the Lady Senators fell behind early and could not recover. 

 

Hayley Lawing got the start in the circle for Walters State, allowing eight runs. She struck out six. 

 

Chattanooga State got on the board first with a run in the second and four in the third. However, the Lady Senators answered back in the fourth. Kailey Dixon reached to lead off the inning, and Jules Johnson singled to put two runners on. Nora Mack was next up and loaded the bases with a single to right. That brought up Imari Golden, and she singled up the middle to score Dixon and make it 5-1. However, a groundout and double play ended the inning there.

 

Chatt State scored two more times in the fifth to make it 7-1, but Johnson cut the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer. Unfortunately for the Lady Senators, Chattanooga State scored one more time and shut the Lady Senators down in the seventh to claim the win.

 

GAME TWO: Chattanooga State 10, No. 5 Walters State 4

 

In game two, Walters State led 3-0 early but could not hold the lead. 

 

Makayla Ramsey got the start in the circle and pitched all seven innings.  

 

Following a scoreless first inning, Walters State got on the board in the bottom of the second as Kendal Mason hit her first home run of the season to make it 1-0.

 

Following a scoreless top of the third from Chattanooga State, Walters State added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Dixon reached to lead off the inning, stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Mack. Following a single by Johnson that moved Mack to third, Brooklyn Copley made it 3-0 with an RBI single. 

 

However, Chattanooga State scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take charge. Walters State got one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Dixon, but Chattanooga State scored four more times and took the win.

Walters State and Chattanooga State will be back in action on Sunday for two more games. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
