Eighth-ranked Lady Senators complete sweep of Jackson State

JACKSON, TN – No. 8 Walters State completed the sweep over Jackson State on Sunday, with two five-inning run-rules. The Lady Senators won 11-0 in game one and 13-3 in game two.


With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 20-2 overall and 11-1 in TCCAA play.

 

GAME ONE: No. 8 Walters State 11, Jackson State 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Nora Mack led the charge at the plate, while Tori Coffman picked up another win in the circle. 

 

Coffman threw four innings, picking up her 13th win of the season, and struck out eight while allowing no hits. Coffman did not allow a hit in 13 innings on the weekend. 

 

Makayla Ramsey pitched the final inning, allowing a hit but striking out one. 

 

At the plate, Mack had two triples and drove home four runs. Imari Golden was a perfect 3-for-3, while Carley Cook hit a two-run homer. 

 

Following two scoreless innings to start, the Lady Senators got on the board in the third as Abigail Taylor singled and scored on a Mack RBI triple. Jules Johnson was up next and made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. 

 

In the fourth, Cook doubled the Lady Senators lead with a two-run homer. Walters State loaded the bases later in the inning and picked up four more runs on a bases loaded walk, a Mack RBI fielder's choice, a passed ball that allowed Taylor to score and an RBI double by Johnson that made it 8-0.

 

Walters State picked up their final three runs of the inning on a triple by Mack that scored Kailey Dixon and Golden. Mack scored on the play as well, reaching home on an error to make it 11-0.

 

GAME TWO: No. 8 Walters State 13, Jackson State 3 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Lady Senators scored early and often for the win. 

 

At the plate, Golden led the way with a three-run homer and four RBI. Johnson had three hits and two RBI, as well. 

 

In the circle, Emma Myatt (1-1) got the start and pitched a complete game. Myatt gave up three runs and struck out two. 

 

The Lady Senators started the scoring in the first, as Dixon led off the game with a double and scored on a Mack RBI single. Johnson was next up and made it 2-0 with an RBI double. The final run of the inning came on a Brooklyn Copley RBI double.

 

Jackson picked up a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1, but Sarah Evers, Golden and Annaston Hulsey had back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles in the third that made it 6-1. 

 

In the fourth, Walters State continued to hit. Johnson got things going with an RBI single, and an Evers RBI single made it 8-1. It was 11-1 one batter later, as Golden continued her impressive day with a three-run homer. 

 

Jackson State added two more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-3, but Walters State closed it out in the fifth with two runs. Those runs came on a passed ball that scored Taylor and an error that allowed Johnson to score.

Walters State will travel to Cleveland State for a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
