No. 19 Lady Senators fall twice Saturday in Sun Chief Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. – No. 19 Walters State finished the Sun Chief Classic with a 2-2 record after falling to Northwest Florida State 5-4 and Shelton State 8-0 on Saturday afternoon.

 

With the losses, the Lady Senators fall to 7-3 on the season, breaking a five-game winning streak they brought into the day.

 

Kenna Kap (4-1) got the start in the circle for Walters State in game one, losing her first game of the season. Kap went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and struck out two. Morgan Riffle replaced her with two outs in the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the game, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.

 

Offensively in game one, the Lady Senators were led by Jenica Brown, Sydney Fox and Kallyn Newport, who each had two hits. Brown and Fox each knocked in a run while Haley Parrott knocked in the other two runs. Parrott has 10 RBI already this season and is hitting .481.

 

Walters State had the tying run on third and the winning run on second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

 

The offense fell silent in game two against Shelton State, totaling just two hits delivered by Parrott and Hanna Taylor.

 

Alexis Duff (1-1) got the start in game two, lasting two innings. She gave up five runs on six hits and struck out one. Kap replaced her in the third inning, throwing just the one inning and allowing one run on two hits. As in game one, Riffle finished off game two, throwing three innings and allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out two.

Walters State returns home for their home opener on Friday, for a doubleheader against Union College JV. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m. with the second game following at 4 p.m.
