15-run inning leads No. 3 Walters State to sweep of Cleveland Community College

FORREST CITY, NC -- No. 3 Walters State used a 15-run fifth inning in game two Tuesday afternoon to sweep Cleveland Community College 10-0 and 16-1. 

The Senators scored 14 of the runs in the inning before an out was recorded.  

With the sweep, Walters State improves to 27-1 on the season. The Senators were led by Alberto Osuna, who had two home runs and drove home six runs.  

NO. 3 WALTERS STATE 10, CLEVELAND CC 0 

Walters State set the tone early in the doubleheader as the Senators scored three runs in the top of the first in game one.  

The Senators were led by Osuna who had two hits and drove in two runs. Cam Fisher had three RBIs while Matthew Ellis, Dalton McLain and Skyler Cannady each knocked in runs.  

In the first, after Caleb McNeely scored the first run on a wild pitch, Osuna quickly made it 3-0 with a two-run blast. Then, in the third the Senators added two more when Ellis hit a solo home run and Osuna scored on a wild pitch.  

In the fifth, the scoring continued as Fisher doubled with the bases loaded, clearing the bases and making it 8-0. After McLain reached on an error that scored a run, Cannady made it 10-0 when he reached on an error that scored McLain.  

Peyton Calitri got the start on the mound for the Senators, his first of the season, and made the most of it. Calitri threw five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out six.  

NO. 3 WALTERS STATE 16, CLEVELAND CC 1 

In game two, Cleveland CC actually built a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Senators woke up the bats and blew the game away. 

Nine Senators drove home runs in game two with Osuna leading the way with four. Nick Block knocked in three runs as he hit two home runs in the game while McLain knocked in two runs.  

After Cleveland broke out to a 1-0 lead, the Senators finally got on the board in the third inning when Block hit his first home run of the game to tie it up. 

Then, in the fifth, the tide turned.  

First it was Lukas Cook who scored Noah Gent on a fielders choice. After Silas Butler and Canndy singled home runs, Jerry Hammons singled one home too and it was 5-1. Then, it was Osuna who blew the game open as he hit a grand slam. 

The scoring continued after that when Gent doubled home Fisher and Block hit his second home run of the game, a two-run bomb. After McLain and McNeely both tripled home runs, Corbin Shaw capped the inning off with a sacrifice fly that scored McNeely.  

Hudson Ross got the start on the mound but struggled and made it through just 0.1 of an inning. Joey Mitchell replaced him and pitched the next 3.2 innings, striking out five while not allowing a hit. He picked up his third win of the season. 

Blake Cooper closed the game out with a scoreless sixth inning. 

UP NEXT: 

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to take on Cleveland State. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
