No. 3 Walters State continue to roll, sweep Chattanooga State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Taking on a Chattanooga State team that gave them their only loss of the season, No. 3 Walters State got revenge, sweeping the Tigers 5-2 and 10-6 on Saturday. 

With the wins, Walters State improves to 21-1 on the season and are 9-1 in conference play. Walters State went a perfect 5-0 this week.  

NO. 3 WALTERS STATE 5, CHATTANOOGA STATE 2  

Walters State used a four-run seventh inning to come back and take down the Tigers in game one of the doubleheader.  

Trailing 2-1, Caleb McNeely started off the rally with a solo home run that tied the game. Then, Alberto Osuna gave Walters State the lead with a three-run bomb. Nathan Hickman closed the game out in the bottom of the inning, picking up his second save.  

The Senators were led in the game by McNeely and Osuna. McNeely had two hits while Osuna had his three-run home run. Nick Block had two hits as well while Lukas Cook knocked in the other run.  

Walters State's first run of the game came in the fourth when Cook reached on an error that scored Cam Fisher.  

On the mound, Hayden Summers got the start, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Joey Mitchell picked up the win, his second of the season, when he pitched a scoreless sixth inning.  

NO. 3 WALTERS STATE 10, CHATTANOOGA STATE 6  

The offense broke out a little earlier for the Senators in game two. While they got down 2-0 again, the Senators scored four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to break the game open. The senators added a run in the seventh and ninth inning as well.  

The Senators totaled 14 hits in the game and were led by Silas Butler who had four hits and knocked in two runs. Along with Butler, Skyler Cannady, Osuna, Nick Block and Jerry Hammons each had two hits. Hammons, Osuna and Block all hit home runs.  

The scoring for the Senators started when Osuna hit a solo home run, his second of the day, in the fourth inning. The scoring continued in the inning when Block grounded out, scoring Fisher. Cook then scored on an error before Cannady scored on an error to make it 4-2.  

In the fifth, it was Hammons who added to the lead with a solo shot. Hammons hit four home runs this week for Walters State.  

The sixth inning continued the scoring when Butler singled home a run, Hammons hit a sacrifice fly, Osuna singled and Butler singled. Block capped off the scoring in the ninth with a bang, mashing a home run to make it 10-6.  

Jake Knapp got the start on the mound for Walters State in game two, throwing four innings while allowing three runs, just one earned, on five hits. Knapp is now 2-0 on the year.  

Nathan Morris replaced him in the fifth, throwing four innings of his own and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out four. Kohl Drake pitched a scoreless ninth to finish it off.  

Up Next: 

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Chattanooga State again. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
