10th-ranked Senators sweep doubleheader from Montreat College JV

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 10 Walters State grabbed two more wins on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Montreat College JV. The Senators won 11-1 in game one and 15-1 in game two.

 

With the wins, Walters State improved to 39-10 overall. 

 

GAME ONE: No. 10 Walters State 11, Montreat College JV 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, the Walters State pitching staff held Montreat to one hit in the win.

 

Ryan Bender (2-1) got the start on the mound and threw two innings. He allowed one hit and struck out one. William Wexler pitched the next two innings, allowing one run on no hits. He struck out three.

 

Nate Conner pitched the final inning of the game, not allowing a hit. 

 

At the plate, Deniel Ortiz, Keaton Ray, Walker Morgan and Carson Cabbage all homered. Ray drove in four runs, while Andrew Grande, Morgan and Cabbage each had two RBI.

 

Ortiz got the scoring started, smashing a solo homer in the top of the first. The Senators got two more runs in the bottom of the second, as Cabbage hit a two-run bomb. 

 

In the third, the home run parade continued as Ray hammered a three-run home run down the right-field line to make it 6-0. Montreat got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, but Walters State scored five in the fifth to end it. Ray started it with an RBI double, and Grande made it 9-1 with a two-RBI single. 

 

That brought up Morgan, and he ended the game with a two-run home run. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 10 Walters State 15, Montreat College JV 1 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, Walters State scored seven in the first and were off from there.

 

Kurtis Reid led the way at the plate for the Senators, hitting a home run and driving home four runs. Jarrett Martin also homered and had three RBI, while Zion Taylor drove in three runs. 

 

On the mound, Manning West got the start and threw 0.2 innings. He gave up one run, before Gage Peterson replaced him and threw an inning. Peterson struck out two. 

 

Aiden Robertson was next in line and he threw 1.1 innings, striking out three. Rowan Park pitched a clean fourth-inning, striking out two, and Tyler Welch struck out one in the fifth. 

 

Montreat got on the board first in the game with a run in the top of the first. However, the Senators responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Those runs came on a Taylor RBI single, a three-run Martin home run and a three-run Reid home run that made it 7-1.

 

In the third, Walters State tacked on five more runs to make it 12-1. Reid started it with an RBI double, and Conner singled home Reid. After Vogele doubled home another run, Sutton and Taylor both had sacrifice flies that drove in runs.

 

The final three Walters State runs came in the fourth, as Vogele had an RBI single, Sutton had an RBI single and Taylor had an RBI single to make it 15-1.

Walters State will be back in action over the weekend, on the road at Cleveland State. Friday's nine-inning game is set for 2 p.m.
