No. 1 Walters State keeps offense going in sweep of Jackson State

JACKSON, TN – Walters State carried their offense over from Thursday afternoon to Saturday as they cruised to a 7-0 and 11-0 sweep of Jackson State. 

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 25-3 overall and 6-1 in TCCAA play.

 

Game One: Walters State 7, Jackson State 0

 

In game one, Kohl Drake and Landon Slemp combined for a complete game shutout as the Senators recorded seven runs on 10 hits. 

 

Drake got the start and improved 6-0 on the season, throwing six innings and striking out 10 while allowing three hits. Slemp pitched a hitless seventh to end the game.

 

At the plate, Caleb McNeely, Corbin Shaw, Noah Gent and Kory Klingenback each hit home runs to lead the way. Colby Backus had three hits as well.

 

The scoring started early for Walters State as Cole McCallum singled home McNeely to make it 1-0. It was 2-0 after the second when Gent went yard for the fourth time this season.

 

In the fifth, McNeely doubled the lead with a two-run shot, his 10th of the season to go along with 33 RBIs. Shaw made it 5-0 one inning later with his fourth home run of the season before Klingenbeck hit a bomb in the seventh and Shaw knocked in another run.

 

Game Two: Walters State 11, Jackson State 0 

 

In game two, Wesley Scott bounced back from his appearance on the mound Monday to throw five scoreless innings while striking out 10.

 

Scott improved to 4-2 with the win and allowed just two hits. Landon Crumbley pitched the final two innings, not allowing a hit and striking out three.

 

At the plate, Backus continued his impressive day with three more hits. He finished the day 6-for-8 at the plate and had a home run. Along with Backus, Gent had three RBIs while Kio Lugo doubled home two runs. Klingenbeck also hit his second home run of the day.

 

After a scoreless first inning, Andrew Ott got the Senators on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Shaw. Backus quickly made it 2-0 with his eighth home run of the season in the third inning. Gent made it 4-0 later in the inning with a two-RBI single. 

 

Two sacrifice flies by McCallum and McLain in the fifth and sixth made it 6-0 and Klingenbeck made it 7-0 later in the sixth with his fourth home run of the year. 

 

In the seventh, Walters State put the game away as Backus scored on a wild pitch, Gent singled in Kruise Newman and Lugo doubled home McLain and Gent.

Walters State will be back in action on Sunday for the final game against Jackson State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
