No. 5 Walters State drops doubleheader to No. 14 Gaston

DALLAS, NC – No. 5 Walters State fell twice on Friday afternoon to No. 14 Gaston College. The Senators lost 3-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two. 

 

With the losses, Walters State fell to 2-2 on the season. 

 

GAME ONE: No. 14 Gaston 3, No. 5 Walters State 1

 

In game one, Walters State scored early but could not find their way on the scoreboard again, as Gaston scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth for the win.

 

Karson Bonaparte got the start on the mound for the Senators, throwing 3.1 innings. Bonaparte gave up one unearned run on one hit, while striking out five. Nate Conner replaced Bonaparte with an out in the fourth and threw one inning, giving up two runs on two hits. Tyler Welch pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up no runs on two hits. Welch struck out two, as well.

 

At the plate, Walters State had six hits. Logen Sutton led the way with two hits, while Brantley Bamberg knocked in the only run for Walters State. Bamberg's RBI came in the second inning, as Sutton singled to left and then scored on a Bamberg double.

 

GAME TWO: No. 14 Gaston 3, No. 5 Walters State 2

 

In game two, Walters State fell behind early before scoring two in the top of the sixth to tie the game. However, Gaston scored once in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.

 

Taz Butler got the start for Walters State in game two, throwing 2.2 innings. Butler allowed no runs on two hits, while striking out four. 

 

After Drew Horn replaced Butler and gave up two runs in 0.2 innings, Miles Smith threw 1.2 innings. Smith struck out four. Ryan Bender followed after Smith and gave up one run, before Aiden Robertson replaced him and threw the final inning. Robertson gave up a hit and struck out one. 

 

Gaston struck first in game two with two runs in the fourth, however, Walters State answered back in the top of the sixth. Deniel Ortiz started the rally with a walk, and Sutton singled. Bamberg then singled to load the bases. Jarrett Martin was the next batter and he hit a sacrifice to right that scored Ortiz. Andrew Grande was up next and tied the game with an RBI single. 

 

However, Gaston got one final run in the bottom half of the sixth to take the win. 

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State and Gaston will meet in Morristown on Saturday. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
