Senators score 26 runs; sweep Southwest Virginia

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 2 Walters State got the bats going early and often on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Southwest Virginia. The Senators took game one by a score of 10-3 and game two by a score of 16-0.

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 19-3 on the season. 

 

GAME ONE: No. 2 Walters State 10, Southwest Virginia 3

 

In game one, Southwest Virginia scored three runs in the top of the first, however, the Senators responded with 10 unanswered runs to take the win. 

 

Cole McCallum and Corbin Shaw led the way at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Both hit home runs, while Jarrett Martin had two triples and drove two runs in. 

 

On the mound, Ty Cobb (1-0) got the start for the Senators. Cobb allowed three runs on three hits and struck out six. Preston Allen replaced Cobb and threw the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four. 

 

Southwest Virginia got the scoring going in the game with a three-run homer in the top of the first. The Senators got a run back in the bottom of the first on a McCallum RBI double and then took the lead in the third with six runs. Those runs were courtesy of a Shaw RBI groundout, two straight wild pitches that scored two runs, a Pedro Pache sacrifice fly, a Martin RBI triple and a Miles Smith RBI single.

 

In the fourth, the Senators scored three more times to make it 10-3. Two of the runs came on back-to-back homers by McCallum and Shaw, with the final run coming on Martin's second triple of the day.

 

GAME TWO: No. 2 Walters State 16, Southwest Virginia 0

 

In game two, the Senators bats continued to stay hot as they completed the doubleheader sweep. 

 

At the plate, Caleb Marmo, Keaton Ray and Angus Pence each totaled two hits while Pence and Kio Lugo drove in three runs each. Lugo's RBIs came on a three-run homer.

 

On the mound, Blake Cooper (1-0) got the start and threw three innings. Cooper allowed no runs on one hit while striking out six. 

 

Cooper was replaced in the fourth by Brenden Pomerleau. Pomerleau threw two innings and didn't allow a hit while striking out one. Ryan Bender pitched the final inning and struck out two. 

 

Following a scoreless first, the Senators struck first in the second as Jackson Bryan singled home Ray and Lugo slugged a three-run homer to make it 4-0.

 

Following a Zion Taylor RBI double in the third that made it 5-0, the Senators scored five in the fourth to break the game open. The scoring started on a Deniel Ortiz single. After a Ray double that scored two, Pence singled him home to make it 9-0. The final run of the inning came on a fielder's choice by Bryan that scored Taylor. 

 

Walters State added one more in the fifth, on an Ortiz sacrifice fly, and then finished things off with five runs in the sixth. Those runs were courtesy of a Will Cawthon RBI single, a Pache fielder's choice that scored Lugo, a bases-loaded walk to Preston Wright and a Pence two-RBI single.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting USC Union. It will be a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
