LEBANON, TN – Corbin Shaw broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning on Thursday against Cumberland University JV with his second home run of the day, a three-run shot, as No. 2 Walters State went on to score five more runs for an 11-3 win.
With the win, Walters State improved to 27-3 overall.
Shaw's first home run of the game came in the second inning and was a solo home run. Shaw had three hits in six trips to the plate.
Along with Shaw, Andrew Ott blasted a three-run homer to go along with another hit. Colby Backus had two hits as well while Cole McCallum knocked in two runs.
Nolan Letzgus got the start on the mound and threw five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. Letzgus improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
Cooper Morgan replaced Letzgus in the sixth inning and threw a scoreless inning. Jacques Gillespie-Taylor, Bracken Rice and Xavier Fosbenner closed things out on the mound with scoreless innings.
It was Cumberland University JV that got things started with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Senators cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second as Shaw hit a solo home run.
Cumberland responded quickly after with a run in the third inning, however, the Senators took the lead for good in the fifth. With the bases loaded, McCallum singled home two runs to tie the game at three. Shaw then came up and gave the Senators the lead with a three-run bomb.
Walters State added two more in the fifth as Noah Gent scored on a delayed steal of home and Declan Wiesner doubled in Dalton McLain.
Ott capped off the scoring in the sixth with a three-run homer.

Walters State will be back in action on the road on Friday for a three-game series against Southwest Tennessee. The Senators will play one game on Friday at 3 p.m. ET and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ET.
