Walters State falls to Saluqis, 98-69

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Walters State fell behind early and never recovered as Southwest Tennessee rolled to a 98-69 victory Saturday night.

The Senators (15-12, 8-8 TCCAA) couldn't hang with the Saluqis shooters as SWCC put four players in double figures and shot 57.1 percent from the floor.

Southwest opened the game on an 8-2 run before Kobe Powell tapped in a layup that got the Senators' offense going. The teams traded baskets until a Jermize Weddle 3-pointer tied the game 16-16 at the 11:20 mark.

While the WSCC offense kept rolling, their defense did not make the trip as they surrendered 28 points over the second half of the first period. SWCC led 44-32 at the break.

The Saluquis never slowed down in the second half, racking up 54 points even as Walters State poured in 37. A three from De'Marius Boyd pulled WSCC within 16 at 11:09 in the second half, but they would never get closer as Southwest Tennessee continued to score at will.

Boyd finished with 25 points for the Senators. Powell contributed 15.

Southwest got 35 from Clythus Griffith , 13 from Christian Jones, 12 from Joshua Kelly and 11 from Justin Batts.
