21st-ranked Senators win opening game of TCCAA/Region VII Tournament over Volunteer State

TULLAHOMA, TN – No. 21 Walters State started slow on Saturday afternoon in their quarterfinal matchup of the TCCAA/ Region VII Tournament against Volunteer State but heated up in the second half for a 92-70 win.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 26-2 overall. 

 

Walters State was balanced with their scoring, as seven scored in double figures. Jair Horton led the way with 14 points, while Micah Simpson, Ramondo Battle, Charvez Ambrose and Malachi Hale each scored 11 points. JR Jacobs and Greg Moore were the final two in double figures with 10 points each.

 

Other scorers for the Senators were Jamar Livingston with six, Jaylen Wharton with four, Chi Shannon with two and Carter Metz with two. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 44.6% from the field and made nine of 24 3-pointers. Walters State were 25-33 from the charity stripe and collected 37 rebounds. 

 

Defensively, Walters State forced 21 turnovers. 

 

It was a slow start to the game for Walters State, as they led by just one at 39-38 at the half. However, much like the regular season went, Walters State heated up in the second half. The Senators scored 53 points and held the Pioneers to 32 points to take the win.

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Monday in the TCCAA/Region VII Semifinals against Columbia State. When the two teams played in the regular season, Walters State won a hard fought contest at Columbia, 75-67, and then won again at home by a score of 77-64.

 

Monday's game is set for 1 p.m. ET.
