Six score in double figures as Walters State eases past Tennessee Wesleyan JV

ATHENS, TN – Six players scored double digits on Wednesday night for Walters State, including five off the bench, as the Senators rolled past Tennessee Wesleyan JV, 111-72.

With the win, Walters State improved to 2-2 on the season. It was the second time this season they've scored triple digits.

The Senators were led in the game by Malachi Hale with 15 points. Both Jair Horton and Ijesuoefe Iyamu added 14 while Destin Barker and Michael Houge had 12 each.

Other scorers in the game included Jaylen Wharton with 11, Jay Hickman with nine, Micah Simpson with seven, Barkari Johnson with six, Wade Pelfrey with four, Ty Hurst, Daveonne Warfield and Izaiha Bredwood each with two and Elijah Davis with one.

Hale, Barker and Wharton led the way on the boards with six rebounds each while Hickman had five assists and Simpson had four. Simpson and Hickman both had three steals, as well.

The two teams traded buckets to start the game and Wesleyan led 9-8 before a layup by Warfield gave the Senators the lead for good. Bredwood followed with a jump shot before Horton made a jumper to make it 14-9. The Senators added a layup from Iyamu and a 3-pointer by Horton before a Hale made shot capped off a 13-0 run and made it 21-9.

Following an old-fashion 3-point play by Wesleyan to break the run, Walters State countered with 10 more points as Iyamu and Hale both made 3-pointers while Hale and Horton made jumpers. The lead grew from there and a Hickman layup with 55 seconds left made it 52-33 at the half.

In the second half, it was more of the same as Walters State outscored Wesleyan 59-39. Houge did all of his damage in the second half with 12 points while Iyamu added nine more and Hale eight more.

The Senators capped the game off with a Wharton dunk and a made free throw by Houge to take the game, 111-72.
