Walters State opens 2022 schedule with blowout win over Experience Academy

Walters State opens 2022 schedule with blowout win over Experience Academy

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State wasted no time getting things rolling in the new year on Wednesday night, taking down Experience Academy, 129-61.

With the win, the Senators improve to 10-6 on the season. Walters State has scored a total of 243 points in two games this season against the Kings.

"Experience is much better than they showed tonight, but I think our pressure had a lot to do with that," Walters State men's coach Bill Carlyle said. "I think we took them out of what they wanted to do and it forced them to get wild. We just need to keep working on our conditioning. But it was a good game and good win."

The Senators benefited from the return of Deovaunta Williams. In his first action this season, Williams started and scored 23 points. Last season, Williams started 13 games and averaged 10.6 points per game.

"Williams was really good tonight," Carlyle said. "He makes things go. He is definitely beneficial to us, and we need him to keep going during this second half of the season."

Along with Williams, Brandon Kabuya Mpoyi had 20 points. Other scorers in the game were Riley Cooper with 13, Destin Barker with 12, Jared Carter with 15, Isaiah Farrior with 10, Dowar Jioklow with nine, Ronnie Thompson Jr. with eight, Josh Jerome with six, Ty Hurst with six, Turner Bailey with five and Izaiha Bredwood with two.

Things started quickly for the Senators in the game as they got up 14-3 five minutes in with Williams, Cooper, Jerome, Farrior and Barker all scoring.

The Senators kept the foot on the gas after that as they extended the lead to 33-8. Williams scored seven during that stretch as Mpoyi had four.

From there, the Senators kept it going and led 57-29 at the break.

In the second half, Walters State scored the first eight points and was off again. Carlyle rotated the entire team during the final 20 minutes as players got some valuable game experience. Jioklow and Mpoyi finished the night off with dunks as the Senators cruised to the victory.

The 129 points is the most the Senators have scored this season and the most points since scoring 136 points last season against Experience Academy.
