Strong second half leads Walters State over Chattanooga State, 89-67

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Walters State led by just one early in the second half on Wednesday evening against Chattanooga State but outscored the Tigers 43-22 the rest of the way, grabbing an 89-67 win.

With the win, the Senators improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in TCCAA play.

Leading the way for Walters State in the scoring column were Da'Mori Lytch and Aiden Goins with 15 points each. Other scorers for Walters State were Malaki Brooks with 14 points, Charvez Ambrose with nine points, Anthony Davis Jr. with nine points, Carter Metz with eight points, Alex Garcia with six points, Adam Kadoura with five points, Elijah Clinton with four points, Stevlen Morris with two points and Quin'Darius Rumph with two points. 

Walters State led 9-2 early thanks to five points from Lytch and increased the lead to 20-9 midway through the half following a three by Brooks and dunk by Lytch. Chattanooga State scored to break the mini run, but Walters State answered back with a Rumph basket and Brooks three to make it 25-11. 

Walters State continued to lead comfortable at 33-21 following an Ambrose three, but Chattanooga State scored seven straight to cut the lead. Brooks broke the Tigers run with a three, and hit another shot with 1:46 to go to make it 38-20. Metz hit one more three in the half for Walters State, and the Senators led 41-34 at the break.

In the second half, Chattanooga State immediately got the lead down to one at 46-45. However, that's when Walters State took over with 10 straight points. During the run, Goins had six points while Metz scored and Lytch hit two free throws that made it 56-45.

Following a bucket by the Tigers, Walters State rallied off six more points with Lytch scoring four of them. The lead grew to 68-50 thanks to five points from Garcia and a Goins bucket, and it was 73-53 after a basket by Ambrose. The Senators kept the foot on the gas, and Kadoura scored five points late to seal the 89-67 win.
