Senators fall on the road to Volunteer State, 71-69

GALLATIN, TN – Walters State trailed for the majority of Saturday's contest against Volunteer State but had a shot for the win at the buzzer.

Trailing by two with four seconds left, Charvez Ambrose took a pass from Malaki Brooks and forced up a contested three. Unfortunately for the Senators, the shot was short and Volunteer State hung on for a 71-69 victory.

With the loss, Walters State fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in TCCAA play.

Ambrose led the way for Walters State with 17 points, while Anthony Davis Jr. also finished with 17. Other scorers for the Senators were Brooks with 13 points, Elijah Clinton with nine points, Da'Mori Lytch with five points, Alex Garcia with five points, Carter Metz with two points and Quin'Darius Rumph with one point. 

It was a slow start for the Senators, as they managed just 29 first half points and trailed by seven at the break. Ambrose hit two 3-pointers and had nine points in the opening 20 minutes, while Davis Jr. had seven and Clinton hit two three's. 

In the second, the Senators crept closer and closer to Volunteer State. With two minutes to go, Walters State trailed 67-63. However, Brooks drove to the hoop and scored, the Senators got a stop and Clinton found Davis Jr. for a game-tying layup. Volunteer scored four straight to regain the lead, but Brooks hit a layup with 11.5 seconds to go. Following a missed free throw, Walters State had one final chance but Ambrose's contested shot fell short. 

In the second half, Brooks hit three 3-pointers and tallied all 13 of his points. Davis. Jr added 10 more, while Ambrose had eight points.
