Ambrose scores 28 as Senators win 80-59 over Southwest Tennessee

MEMPHIS, TN – What a week it's been for Charvez Ambrose.

On Wednesday, Ambrose scored 12 second-half points to lead Walters State to a win over Columbia State. Then, on Saturday, Ambrose returned home and had a game to remember.

Taking on Southwest Tennessee, Ambrose scored 28 points and blew open a close game in the second half as the Senators went on for an 80-59 victory over the Saluqis.

With the win, the Senators improved to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in TCCAA play. The Senators have won 10 of their last 11 games.

Ambrose was 10-13 from the field in the game and 6-8 from 3-point range. He had 19 in the second half, including five 3-pointers.

Along with Ambrose, Da'Mori Lytch finished with a double-double, totaling 15 points and 14 rebounds. Other contributors for Walters State were Anthony Davis Jr. with nine points and four rebounds, Alex Garcia with eight points and nine rebounds, Elijah Clinton with seven points, Carter Metz with five points and four assists, Aiden Goins with four points, Malaki Brooks with two points, four rebounds and three assists and Stevlen Morris with two points. 

Walters State led 7-6 early in the game, before blowing things open with a 14-1 run. During the run, Lytch scored, Ambrose drilled a 3-pointer, Clinton scored, Ambrose laid one in and then scored again on a floater and Clinton converted an and-one that made it 21-7.

However, Southwest answered with an 11-0 run of their own and cut the lead to three. It was 23-22 a few minutes later, but Lytch hit two free throws, Garcia hit a three and Davis Jr. scored to make it 30-22. The two teams traded free throws in the final minute before Davis Jr. converted an and-one with five seconds left to make it 35-26 at the half.

In the second half, the lead was 40-31 in favor of Walters State before the Senators completely took over. Ambrose started things with a 3-pointer, and then hit another one to make it 46-33. The Senators got a stop on their next possession, and Ambrose connected on another 3-pointer to make it a 16-point game. The Senators got a stop again, and Garcia hit a 3-pointer this time to make it 52-33.

The run continued on Walters State's next possession with a Metz jumper, and Goins scored four quick ones to put the run at 18-3. Southwest scored to finally break the run, but Ambrose converted an and-one to make it 61-35. Ambrose hit one final 3-pointer that made it 66-38, and Metz got the lead to 31 with a 3-pointer.

From there, Walters State was never challenged on their way to the 80-59 win.
