Senators close out regular season with 86-62 win over Jackson State on Sophomore Night

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State ended the regular season in a big way on Saturday afternoon, grabbing an 86-62 win over Jackson State. 

With the victory, the Senators closed the regular season with a 19-8 overall record and a 13-5 record in TCCAA play.

Saturday was also Sophomore Night for Walters State as Charvez Ambrose, Carter Metz, Aiden Goins, Anthony Davis Jr. and Alex Garcia were all honored before the game. 

Leading the way for Walters State in the game was Da'Mori Lytch with 21 points, 14 of them in the second half. Along with Lytch, Charvez Ambrose had 18 points while Alex Garcia finished with 12 points. Other scorers were Malaki Brooks with 10 points, Aiden Goins with eight points, Carter Metz with four points, Anthony Davis Jr. with four points, Nathan Beasley with four points, Adam Kadoura with three points and Elijah Clinton with two points. 

The two teams battled close to start, and Walters State led 12-8 eight minutes into the game. However, the Senators began to get some separation at the 12 minute mark as Goins scored, Lytch hit a free throw, Garcia scored and Davis Jr. scored to make it 19-8. From there, the lead grew as Ambrose scored eight straight to make it 31-18. It was 35-22 after a basket by Metz, and 37-24 after a basket by Beasley. Jackson scored the final three points of the half, but Walters State led 37-27 at the break.

In the second half, the Senators took over at the 44-37 mark as Lytch scored, Garcia hit a three and Brooks hit a three to make it 52-37. Jackson State scored to break the run, but Lytch scored four straight, Brooks scored and Ambrose scored to up the lead to 60-39. From there, the Senators were on cruise control and took the win.

In the final 20 minutes, Lytch had 14 points while Ambrose had 10 and Brooks and Garcia each scored eight.

Walters State will begin their postseason run next weekend in the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament at Southwest Tennessee. The Senators' seeding and first game are yet to be determined
