Senators, 23rd-ranked Lady Senators host Volunteer State on Saturday

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State hosts their first Saturday games since November 9th this weekend when Volunteer State comes to town. 

The Senators and 23rd-ranked Lady Senators come into Saturday's games after sweeping Cleveland State on Wednesday evening. The men's team took a 68-59 win over the Cougars, while the Lady Senators prevailed 53-46. 

Earlier this season, the Lady Senators took an 87-47 win over Volunteer State while the Senators fell 71-69 to the Pioneers.

Saturday will also be our basketball Alumni Day. All attending alumni will be recognized on court between games and there will be a room reserved for you to enjoy food, take photos and receive Walters State gear. Please RSVP with your name, graduating year and T-shirt size to jonathan.nash@ws.edu.

Walters State

On Wednesday, both Walters State teams picked up wins, the Senators winning 68-59 and the Lady Senators taking a 53-46 victory. 

For the women, Kyra Perkins played the role of sophomore leader, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and lead the Lady Senators to the win. Perkins had 25 points and seven rebounds in the game, while Morgan Williams had seven points and 11 rebounds. Nyjah Gibbs also had 10 points. 

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 16-4 overall and 13-0 in TCCAA play. Walters State now has a three-game lead in the conference standings. 

For the men, Da'Mori Lytch recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Charvez Ambrose had 13 points, as well, while Stevlen Morris had seven points off the bench in the first half. 

With the victory, the Senators moved to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in TCCAA play. Walters State sits in fourth-place in the conference, just two games back of first-place Columbia State. 

Volunteer State

Like Walters State, both Volunteer State teams picked up wins on Wednesday evening over Southwest Tennessee. The Pioneers won 102-90 over the Saluqis, while the Volunteer State women won 51-47. 

For the women, Kyra Shearon led the way for Volunteer State with 18 points, while Kendall Myree had 12 points and 15 rebounds. The Lady Pioneers held Southwest to 28% from the field and forced 20 turnovers.

With the win, Volunteer State moved to 4-19 overall and 2-12 in TCCAA play.

On the men's side, the Pioneers scored over 100 for the second time this season. Lavonta Ivery had a career night for Volunteer State in the win, finishing with 34 points. Willie Wilson added 15 points, while Taylor Groves had 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds. 

With the win, Volunteer State moved to 11-11 overall and 10-3 in TCCAA play. The Pioneers are tied for second in the conference standings, just one game back of first-place.

Women

Kyra Perkins (Forward): Perkins has been huge for Walters State over the last two games, totalling 43 points and 16 rebounds. For the season, Perkins is averaging 16.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds. 

Nyjah Gibbs (Forward): Gibbs enters the game as one of the top rebounders in the conference. Gibbs averages 8.0 rebounds per game and has had seven or more rebounds in seven of the last eight games. Gibbs has recorded a double-double three times this season. 

Volunteer State

Kendall Myree: Myree is third in the conference this season, averaging 16.3 points per game, and is first in the conference in blocks with 117. Myree averages 9.8 rebounds per game and has 206 on the season. 

Ella Disney: Disney averages 7.5 points per game and is shooting 39% from 3-point range. Disney has a 2.2 assist to turnover ratio and has scored 35 points in her last three games. 

Walters State

Men

Da'Mori Lytch (Forward): Lytch has caught fire in 2025 for Walters State. In nine games in the new year, Lytch is averaging 13.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Lytch has finished with eight double-doubles and is averaging 11.4 points and eight rebounds per game on the season.

Charvez Ambrose (Guard): Ambrose has been solid for the Senators over the last five games. During those games, Ambrose is averaging 14.8 points per game and has knocked in 14 3-pointers. On the season, Ambrose is averaging 10.6 points per game.

Volunteer State

Taylor Groves: Groves is second in the conference in points per game, averaging 20.8. Groves leads the conference with 138 assists, averaging 6.3 assists per game and averages 6.2 rebounds as well. Groves has scored over 20 points in 11 games this season.

Lavonta Ivery: Ivery has lit up the conference over the last five games, averaging 21.2 points per game. For the season, Ivery is averaging 13 points per game.
