No. 17 Walters State completes sweep of USC Salkehatchie

ALLENDALE, SC – No. 17 Walters State wrapped up their first series of the season on Sunday, grabbing 5-1 and 12-0 wins over USC Salkehatchie.

With the sweep, the Senators improved to 3-0 on the season. 

GAME ONE: No. 17 Walters State 5, USC Salkehatchie 1 

In game one, Walters State got a strong pitching performance from Aiden Robertson and Rowan Park to secure the victory.

Robertson (1-0) got the start and threw three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out six. Park replaced Robertson in the fourth and threw the final four innings. Park allowed no runs on one hit and struck out seven. 

At the plate, Jack Torbett had three hits, while Taylor Harris and Nate Conner each collected two hits. 

The Senators got on the board in the top of the first as Harris was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a Conner single, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

USC Salkehatchie answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Senators got the lead back in the second when Drew Blalock scored on a passed ball, Harris doubled in Torbett and Conner singled home Harris to make it 4-1.

The Senators got one more run in the game, scoring in the third on a balk that sent Kole Fenton across the plate. 

From there, Robertson struck out the side in the bottom of the third, Park struck out two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. 

GAME TWO: No. 17 Walters State 12, USC Salkehatchie 0 

In game two, the Senators collected 10 hits and pitched a shutout on the mound.

At the plate, Jack Vogele and Brantley Bamberg each homered while Drew Blalock and Vogele drove in three runs each. 

On the mound, Tyler Welch (1-0) got the start and threw three innings. Welch allowed one hit and struck out five. Brady Scott pitched the fourth for the Senators and struck out one, before Reilly Byers struck out two in an inning of work. After Riley Franklin struck out the side in the sixth, Mason Trucks struck out two in the seventh to close things out.

The Senators got on the board in the first with a two-RBI single by Blalock and made it 6-0 in the second as a wild pitch scored Atticus Goodson, a fielder's choice scored Fenton and Bamberg smacked a two-run homer. 

Following a run in the fourth on a Walker Morgan RBI single, a wild pitch scored Kenny Cox in the fifth to make it 8-0. Walters State closed things out with four runs in the seventh, as Vogele hit a three-run home run and a fielder's choice scored Holden Pantier

Walters State will be back in action next Friday, traveling to take on No. 14 Gaston College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 pm ET.
