No. 9 Walters State win 12th straight, sweep Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – No. 9 Walters State broke a one-run game open with 10 runs in the final two innings on Friday against Dyersburg State, run-ruling the Eagles 16-5 in seven innings to complete the sweep.

With the win, the Senators improved to 32-5-1 overall and 14-4 in TCCAA play. Walters State has now won 12 straight games. 

At the plate, Tyler Myatt homered, doubled and drove in four runs while Carson Cabbage had three hits, one being a home run, and drove in two runs. Holden Pantier also homered in the game, and Kole Fenton tripled and drove in three runs. Jack Vogele had two hits and two RBIs as well, while Walker Morgan had three hits. 

On the mound, Tyler Welch (7-0) got the start and threw three innings. Welch allowed one run on one hit. Riley Franklin threw the next 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, before Mason Trucks got the next two outs. Reilly Byers threw a scoreless sixth inning, striking out one, and Matthew Porchas struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning. 

Walters State picked up a run in the top of the first on a Vogele double that scored Nate Conner, and then made it 2-0 in the second when Cabbage smacked a solo home run. Dyersburg picked up a run in the third to cut the lead to 2-1, but two runs scored in the fourth for Walters State as Jack Torbett grounded out to score Morgan and Cabbage scored on a balk that made it 4-1.

In the fifth, Myatt extended the lead to 6-1 with his 15th home run of the season but Dyersburg State scored four in the bottom half to cut the lead to one. However, the Senators answered back in the sixth with eight runs to go up 14-5. Those runs came on a Fenton three-RBI triple, a Vogele RBI double, a Myatt RBI double, a Pantier two-run home run and a Cabbage RBI single.

The Senators scored two more runs in the seventh on a passed ball that scored Fenton and a Morgan RBI single that made it 16-5. Porches shut the Eagles down in the bottom half of the inning, and that was the game.

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to take on Cleveland State in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 2 pm ET.
