COLUMBIA,TN – Top-seeded Walters State saw their season end in the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament on Monday evening, falling 10-4 to fourth-seeded Cleveland State.
With the loss, the Senators closed the season at 44-14.
At the plate, Brantley Bamberg hit a home run and drove in two runs. Jack Vogele had the Senators' other RBI.
On the mound, Manning West (8-1) got the start and threw three innings. West gave up eight runs on seven hits and struck out four. Ethan Walker replaced West in the fourth following a lengthy weather delay and threw 3.1 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five.
Next in line was Jonny Stevens and he threw 1.2 innings. Stevens gave up no runs on one hit and struck out two. Aiden Robertson then got the first two outs of the ninth, striking out one, before Ryan Bender got the final out of the top of the ninth with a strikeout.
Cleveland got the scoring started in the first with three runs. However, Walters State cut the lead to 3-2 in the second as Bamberg smacked a two-run home run.
Cleveland State kept their foot on the gas with five runs in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to grab a 10-2 lead. The Senators tried to rally in the seventh, as Vogele singled in a run and Nate Conner grounded into a double play but scored a run to make it 10-4.
Unfortunately for the Senators, that was the last run that would score as they fell to the Cougars.
