Torbett hits walk off single to earn split over Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 8 Walters State dropped a 4-3 contest to Southwest Tennessee in game one Friday afternoon but walked things off in game two, grabbing an 8-7 victory.

With the split, the Senators moved to 18-3-1 overall and 8-3 in TCCAA play. 

GAME ONE: Southwest Tennessee 4, No. 8 Walters State 3

In game one, the Senators led 3-2 in the seventh but gave up two runs in the inning.

Walker Morgan got the start on the mound and threw six innings. Morgan gave up two runs on five hits while striking out four. Rowan Park (0-1) replaced Morgan in the seventh and got two outs, allowing two runs on one hit. Matthew Porchas got the final out of the inning. 

At the plate, the Senators had just three hits in the game. Kole Fenton and Atticus Goodson each homered, while Holden Pantier hit a double.

The Senators got on the board first in the game in the bottom of the second, as Pantier doubled and scored on an error. Southwest took the lead with two runs in the third, but the Senators grabbed the lead back in the fifth as Goodson homered and Fenton homered to make it 3-2.

However, Southwest scored two in the seventh and won the game.

GAME TWO: No. 8 Walters State 8, Southwest Tennessee 7

In game two, the Senators trailed by a run heading to the bottom of the seventh but got two runs and walked things off.

Jack Torbett was the hero in the game, singling home the game-winning run. Morgan tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI single. Morgan hit a home run in the game as well and drove in two runs. 

Along with those two, Fenton hit his second home run of the day and drove home three runs while Tyler Myatt homered and had two RBIs. 

On the mound, Aiden Robertson got the start and threw four innings. Robertson gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits and struck out five. Jace Kirby replaced Robertson in the fifth and threw 1.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one. Mason Trucks (1-0) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Walters State, allowing no hits and striking out one. 

The Senators got on the board in the bottom of the first as Myatt smacked a two-run homer and added another run in the second on a Morgan solo home run. Southwest got a run back in the top of the fourth, but Walters State answered in the bottom of the inning as Fenton smashed a three-run bomb to make it 6-1. 

However, Southwest tied the game in the fifth with five runs and took the lead in the sixth with a run that made it 7-6. That was the score headed to the seventh when Myatt singled with one out. Justin Bell pinch ran and moved to second on a Pantier walk and then scored to tie the game on an RBI single by Morgan. Following a line out for the second out, Torbett came up and won the game with an RBI single that scored Pantier.
