Walters State claims top 10 finish at NJCAA Div. II Golf Championship

PLYMOUTH, IN – Walters State jumped two spots on the final day of the NJCAA Div. II Golf Championship and claimed a top-10 finish at Swan Lake Resort Black Course.  

As a team, the Senators shot a 307 on Friday, their second-best score of the tournament, and finished with a team score of 81-over. That was good enough for a 10th place finish.  

Parkland College held off South Mountain Community College in the final round to take home the Championship by two strokes.  

For the Senators, the final round was capped off by Nate Vaughan. Vaughan, who shot a 73 on Friday, approached the par-3 eighth at one-over. Using a four iron, Vaughan holed out off the tee for a hole-in-one. Vaughan went on to finish the tournament in a tie for 28th place and was Walters State's top finisher.  

Along with Vaughan, Hunter Hartman and Chad Homan both finished in the top-50 after both shooting 78's on Friday. Hartman finished in a tie for 37th and birdied the fifth, 14th and 15th holes while Homan finished in a tie for 45th after birding holes five, six and 15 on Friday.  

Capping it off for Walters State was Hogan Herring and Justin Cowden. Herring matched Hartman and Homan on Friday, shooting a 78. That allowed him to finish in 74th. Cowden shot an 82 on Friday to finish in a tie for 90th.  

South Mountain's Cecil Belisle won the tournament, shooting six-under to win by four shots.
