Ellis wins NJCAA DII Region 7/Southeast District Championship; Senators golf qualifies for NJCAA DII National Tournament

BRISTOL, TN – It took a playoff, but Walters State's Jeremy Ellis took home the NJCAA DII Region 7/Southeast District Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Bristol Country Club. 

 

As a team, the seventh-ranked Senators finished in second place with a score of seven-over to qualify for the NJCAA DII National Golf Tournament May 23-36 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN. 

 

Roane State won the tournament with a team score of even-par. 

 

Ellis won the individual tournament with a score of three-under after shooting an even-part in round three on Tuesday. Ellis was tied with Roane State's Kieran McCarthy, but won in a playoff. In round three, Ellis birdied the eighth, ninth, 14th and 17th holes. 

 

Earning All-District honors alongside Ellis was Sawyer Spoone. Spoone finished in fourth place with a one-under score after shooting a one-under, 70 in round three. Spoone eagled the sixth hole and then birdied the eighth and 15th holes. 

 

Other finishers for Walters State were AJ Rinehart (T-11), Chad Homan (16) and JT McKenzie (21). Rinehart finished the tournament at seven-over, shooting a six-over,77 in round three with birdies on two, eight, 11 and 13. Meanwhile, Homan shot a two-over, 73 in round three with a birdie on nine to finish the tournament at 10-over. McKenzie shot an even par, 71 in round three, birdieing the third, seventh, ninth, 10th, 14th and 17th holes. McKenzie finished at 15-over for the tournament.
