Lady Senators cruise to victory in home opener

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State's first home match went exactly the way head coach Megan Blaylock had envisioned; a packed house with the entire team contributing.

The Lady Senators cruised to victory in their home opener against the Bryan College JV, winning in straight sets 25-11, 25-12 and 25-6 at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium and Assembly Hall on Wednesday night.

"That's the best type of game when you can get everybody off the floor and still produce," Blaylock said. "It's good for everybody to get the playing time under their belt and let all their families and friends see them play."

Walters State (7-5) trailed only once in Wednesday's match as Bryan took a 2-0 lead in the second set, but WSCC scored the next three and then added seven straight after Bryan tied it at 3 as McKenzie Jenkins served up six straight points including an ace.

Kaley Muncy then served back-to-back aces as the Lady Senators pulled away before laying down kills to account for three of Walters State's last four points of the set.

Muncy finished the match with nine kills and added another service ace in the third set, helping her accumulate six of Walters State's 15 for the match.

"She's doing really well this season," Blaylock said of Muncy. "She's our No. 1 option on offense. We've moved from her from the outside last year to the middle this year and she's excelling, surpassing all of our expectations."

Courtney Dotson served five straight points to open the third set, in which the Lady Senators scored 12 of the last 13 points after a kill by Bryan's Mary Laxton.

Micayla Vallie, who recorded 13 digs while Dotson had 10 along with 15 assists, served up eight straight points for a 22-5 lead before the Lady Senators scored the last three points to win the match.

Hayley Wolfe led the Lady Senators with 16 digs, giving her 197 for the season while Vallie has 190 digs and 188 assists through 12 matches.

Two blocks by Olivia Kent helped Walters State close out the opening set.

"It's been a learning experience for sure," Blaylock said of the Walters State's challenging road stretch to open the season. "We still have to tweak a few things but we're on the upside of it right now."

The Lady Senators hit the road Thursday night for a 6:30 p.m. first serve at Montreat College.
