Lady Senators get back on track with sweep of Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN – Walters State bounced back from a tough loss on Tuesday by sweeping Cleveland State on Thursday evening, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22). 

 

With the win, Walters State moved to 10-9 on the season. It's their sixth-straight season with double digit wins. 

 

The two teams traded 2-0 runs to start the match on Thursday before an ace by Taylor Spears put the Lady Senators out in front. Jordan Moore had her second kill of the match to make it 4-2 and then another ace by Spears made it 5-2.

 

From there, the Lady Senators went on a run to take a 9-3 lead before Cleveland State scored four straight. At 10-9, Sidney Keck and Haylee Richardson gave Walters State some comfort with back-to-back kills to make it 12-9.

 

Walters State held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set, forcing a timeout at 19-14 and scoring five straight out of the timeout to make it 24-14. Cleveland State rallied off three points before the Lady Senators got a kill from Maddie Rockrohr to end the set. 

 

It was Cleveland State who came out firing in the second set with a 3-1 lead before Mackenzie Sweigart had a kill and Halyn Long an ace to tie it up. Richardson then gave Walters State the lead with a kill. 

 

The second set saw early ties at four, five, six, nine and 10 before Cleveland State took a 15-11 lead and forced a Walters State timeout. Cleveland State continued to lead and even led late at 18-14. However, Walters State scored nine straight points to go up 23-18. 

 

Cleveland State made one last push as they got it back to 24-21 before the Lady Senators took the set to go up 2-0. 

 

In the final set, Cleveland State took a 6-1 lead before Walters State tied the match at nine and then took an 11-9 lead. The Lady Cougars continued to fight and tied the match at 17 before Walters State took the lead back and held on from there. A kill from Madyson Greenlee ended the set and match. 

 

Up Next:

Walters State will be back in action on Friday for the opening match of the Walters State Invitational against Wallace State. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
