WSVB: Walters State sweeps Bryan College JV on Sophomore Night

MORRISTOWN, TN – It was Sophomore Night for the Walters State volleyball team on Monday evening, and the Lady Senators capped the night off with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-17) sweep of Bryan College JV.

With the win, Walters State ended the regular season at 22-7 and on a five-game winning streak.

"It was great to come out and get a win on Sophomore Night," Walters State coach Megan Blaylock said. "We have a great group of sophomores on this team that have made a positive impact on the program during their time here. We will definitely miss them."

The sophomores honored on Monday evening were Taylor Spears, Maddie Rockrohr, Jaci Drinnon, Haylee Richardson, Mattie Davis, Allison Singleton and Lauren Mims

During Monday's match, those sophomores paved the way to yet another win for the Lady Senators.

It wasn't the best of starts for Walters State as Bryan tied the opening set at nine and 11 and then took the lead, 13-11. But the Lady Senators would tie the set back up at 13 and 14 before going on a 3-0 run to go up 17-14. During the run, Richardson had an ace and Davis had a kill.

The lead would remain from there for Walters State and a kill by Richardson closed the first set out at 25-19.

Motivated after the opening set, the Lady Senators came out on fire in set number two. Walters State scored the first four points and built their lead to 5-1 early after a kill by Richardson. Bryan would close the gap to 6-3, but the Lady Senators took off from there with 10 straight points to go up 16-3. During the run, Madyson Greenlee had multiple kills while Rockrohr and Catherine Sweeney each had kills.

Bryan finally broke the run with a point, but Walters State cruised the rest of the way as they took a 25-5 second set victory.

The final set of the match was much like the first as Bryan College led early at 9-5. The Lady Senators battled back and tied the match at 11 after back-to-back kills from Mims and Richardson, and then took the lead on an ace from Singleton.

Following the ace, Walters State tried to gain control and took a 15-11 lead. However, Bryan College responded and cut it to 16-15 before back-to-back kills by Rockrohr. Walters State regained control from there and a Rockrohr ace and Sweeney kill helped give the Lady Senators a 25-17 third set win.
