Lady Senators cruise to conference opening win over Pellissippi State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State opened up conference play at home on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-15) sweep over Pellissippi State.

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in TCCAA play.

"It's always great to open up conference play with a win," Walters State coach Megan Blaylock said. "I thought we did a good job all the way around. Everyone that came in played well and contributed."

For the second straight home game, Finley Surber and Haylee Richardson played well at the net for the Lady Senators to lead the way.

"Both Finley and Haylee continue to improve," Blaylock said. "They both came in and did their jobs tonight really well. I'm very happy with the way they played tonight."

Things started well for Walters State in the match as they built a 9-3 lead and forced a Pellissippi timeout. During the run the Lady Senators got kills from Catherine Sweeney, Alyssa Campbell and Lauren Mims and an ace from Allison Singleton

Following the timeout, the lead grew as Walters State went up 15-5 on an ace by Jaci Drinnon. Following an ace by Sweeney and a kill by Richardson, the lead was 24-9. Pellissippi rallied off four straight points, but Mims had a kill to give Walters State a 25-13 set one win.

Things continued to go well for the Lady Senators in set two as Surber had three straight kills to open up the set. The lead got to 11-4 on a kill by Richardson and then 16-4 on a rare kill by Drinnon.

Pellissippi broke the Lady Senators run with a point, but Walters State would score five straight after to go up 22-5. Pellissippi scored one more point before the Lady Senators scored three straight to close it out at 25-6.

In the final set, the two teams battled back-and-forth until Richardson had two kills and a block to give Walters State a 7-4 lead. Pellissippi would stay close for much of the set before a 7-0 run at 17-13 gave the Lady Senators some cushion. During the run, Richardson had two more kills while Mims had a kill. After two points from Pellissippi, Bailey Fair closed the match out.
