Lady Senators sweep past Cleveland State for road victory

Lady Senators sweep past Cleveland State for road victory

CLEVELAND, TN – Walters State looked like a well-rested team on Wednesday evening after a week off, sweeping Cleveland State 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-22).

With the win, the Lady Senators moved to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in Region 7 play.

In typical fashion, it was Jordan Moore who got the Lady Senators off-and-rolling to start the match with a massive kill. Moore added two more kills a few points later, and Walters State led 4-1. The Lady Senators lead grew to 9-4 after Sidney Keck had a block and Rachel Miller registered a kill. Walters State forced a Cleveland State timeout on the very next point as Mackenzie Sweigart had a kill to make it 10-4.

Following the timeout, Keck added a kill to the stat sheet, as did Moore, and the lead grew to 18-9. The Lady Senators closed the set out at 25-11 as Moore had another kill, and Takiya Curry tallied two kills of her own.

In the second set, Walters State jumped up to a quick lead again as they pulled out in front 8-3. Following a quick run by Cleveland State to make it 8-6, Walters State rallied off four straight points, capped off by a Sweigart block, to force a Cleveland State timeout.

The Lady Senators came out of the timeout firing again as Mercedes Collins had a kill and Sweigart another block that made it 14-7. Cleveland State cut the lead to 15-10, but Walters State scored 10 of the final 11 points of the set to go up 2-0 in the match. It was a complete team effort during the run as Moore, Faith Heskett, Bella Webb, Maddie Rockrohr, Haylee Richardson, Allison Singleton and Taylor Spears all contributed for the Lady Senators.

The third set was the closest of the night as the two teams were tied at two, three, five, six, seven, eight and nine before Walters State scored three straight to make it 12-9. Cleveland State stayed close from there and never let the lead get away from them. However, the Lady Senators also never allowed them to pull even. 16-15 and 17-16 was the closest it got before Rockrohr and Keck hammered home kills to widen the gap.

Walters State forced one final timeout by Cleveland State at 21-17 and a great dig by Hannah Freeman forced an error from Cleveland State on match point and gave the Lady Senators the win.
