Lady Senators start season with victories over Denmark Tech, No. 16 Cape Fear

SPARTANBURG, SC – Walters State started the season on the winning end of two matches on Friday in the Spartanburg Methodist Invitational, sweeping NJCAA DI opponent Denmark Tech 3-0 (25-2, 25-5, 25-7) and winning a five-set thriller over No. 16 in NJCAA DII Cape Fear 3-2 (15-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-13, 15-7).

With the victories, Walters State moved to 2-0 on the season. It's the third time since 2015 that the Lady Senators have started the season with two wins.

The Lady Senators were on from the jump against Denmark Tech in their season opener as Denmark Tech failed to score double digits in any of the three sets.

It was the serving for the Lady Senators that was effective in the match as Mattie Davis began her Walters State career with six aces to go along with five kills. Bella Webb led the team with seven aces.

In the second match, Walters State battled back from being 1-0 and 2-1 down to take a thrilling matchup over the 16th ranked team in DII in Cape Fear.

Against Cape Fear, it was two veterans that led the way at the net as Jordan Moore had 15 kills and two blocks while Mackenzie Sweigart had nine kills and two blocks. Freshman Maddie Rockrohr had nine kills and 10 digs in her debut as well while sophomore Faith Heskett had a team-high 20 digs in the match.
