WSVB: Lady Senators open season with sweep of Caldwell, Southwest Virginia

CEDAR BLUFF, VA – Walters State opened up the volleyball season in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Caldwell Community College (25-21, 25-22, 25-13) and host Southwest Virginia (25-5, 25-21, 25-13).

 

With the wins, Walters State improved to 2-0 on the season. 

 

In match number one of the day against Caldwell, Alyssa Campbell had a strong opening match of her Walters State career with 11 kills and four blocks. Along with Campbell, Maddie Rockrohr had 10 kills. Sophomore Jaci Drinnon had 14 digs, while Allison Singleton had 18 assists. 

 

Against Southwest Virginia, it was a team effort as the Lady Senators had 10 total aces. Individually, Drinnon had 13 digs while Mattie Davis had 10 kills and freshman Catherine Sweeney had eight kills and three blocks.

Walters State will be back in action next week as they travel to the Cape Fear Invitational. On Friday, the Lady Senators take on No. 1 Richard Bland at 5 p.m. and No. 19 Cape Fear at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Walters State will play Lake-Sumter State at 11 a.m. and St. Johns River State College at 1 p.m.
