WILMINGTON, NC – Walters State's postseason run came to an end on Friday evening in the Southeast District B Championship to Cape Fear, 3-1(25-16, 25-15, 20-25, 25-10).

 

With the loss, Walters State finished the season with a 15-13 record. The Lady Senators were Region VII Champions and came one win away from making the NJCAA DII Volleyball Tournament. 

 

It was Cape Fear that came out firing to start as they got up 5-0 before a Jordan Moore block put the Lady Senators on the board. Moore added an ace a couple points later to make it 6-3.

 

However, Cape Fear kept pushing and made it 10-3 before Mackenzie Sweigart stopped the bleeding with a kill. Bella Webb then added a kill to make it 12-8. However, Cape Fear retook the momentum and got up 20-11. Walters State tried to fight back but it was too little, too late. 

 

In the second set, Cape Fear scored the first two points of the set before the Lady Senators scored two straight to tie it. Webb gave Walters State the lead a point later with an ace. 

 

Cape Fear retook the lead and then continued to hold onto the lead, eventually building it to 15-8 and forcing a Walters State timeout. The Lady Senators could never cut deep into the lead from there as Cape Fear went up 2-0 with a second set win.

 

With their backs against the wall, Walters State responded. Cape Fear led 4-2 early, but Walters State tied the set at six and seven before a Moore kill gave them the lead. Mercedes Collins followed up the kill with a block before two more points made it 11-7 in favor of the Lady Senators and forced a timeout. 

 

Walters State kept the momentum following the timeout and got up 15-9 after a Sweigart kill. Cape Fear made one final comeback late in the set to make it 20-16, but Moore had a kill to end that chance. A kill from Maddie Rockrohr ended the set and put Walters State on the board. 

 

Unfortunately, the Lady Senators ran out of gas as they fell 25-10 in the final set.
