CHATTANOOGA, TN – A short-handed Walters State volleyball team battled on Tuesday evening against Chattanooga State but ultimately fell, 3-1 (25-10, 27-29, 25-9, 25-20).
With the loss, Walters State fell to 7-7 on the season and 3-2 in Region VII Play.
It was the Lady Senators who started off strong as they got out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set with Mercedes Collins having a kill to open up the match. The Lady Senators continued to lead from there as Collins had another kill to make it 7-4. Chattanooga State would tie the set at seven before a kill by Takiya Curry and an ace made it 9-7.
Unfortunately for the Lady Senators, that would be the last lead they would have in the set as Chattanooga State took the lead with a 25-10 first set victory.
In set two, Walters State scored the first two points again as Moore had a kill. Once again, the two teams would battle from there as the Lady Senators finally got up three with a 16-13 lead on a Moore kill and then 17-13 on an Allison Singleton kill.
Chatt State came charging again, but Lady Senators wouldn't budge and led 20-17. At 22-19, Chatt State called timeout and then took the lead 24-23. Battling against set point, Walters State went to the well with Moore and she delivered with a set-tying kill.
The two teams traded points from there until Walters State finally broke through with back-to-back points to take the set, 29-27, and tie the match at one set a piece.
Hoping to build off that momentum, it was Chattanooga State who came out firing in the third set and never let the Lady Senators in it as they took a 2-1 lead with a 25-9 third set victory.
In the final set, the two teams battled to a 2-2, and 3-3 before a huge Singleton block gave Walters State the lead. The lead grew to 5-3 on a Sweigart kill, but Chattanooga State tied the match up again.
At 9-9, Chattanooga State scored four straight points and held off a late Walters State comeback to take the set and match at 25-20.
