Lady Senators sweep Roane State for sixth win in a row

Lady Senators sweep Roane State for sixth win in a row

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State made quick work in their match on Tuesday evening, sweeping Roane State 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-12).

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 17-6 and 5-1 in conference play. Walters State has now won six in a row.

"I thought we played really well from start to finish," Walters State coach Megan Blaylock said. "We did a really nice job in all phases. It's good to see us play like that, especially with our tournament coming up this weekend."

Leading the way for Walters State were a handful of players. That included Lauren Mims, Alyssa Campbell, Catherine Sweeney and Olivia Brown.

"I really thought everyone played well," Blaylock said. "We were really solid around the net but really we played well at every spot."

It was a tight opening set at the start as the two teams were tied at one, three, four, seven, eight, nine and 10. Following the tie at 10, the Lady Senators found a rhythm with two straight points. The lead hovered around two for a while until Campbell had back-to-back kills to make it 19-15. Campbell then had two blocks while Mattie Davis had a block as the Lady Senators went up 22-16.

From there, the Lady Senators closed strong and took the opening set 25-19.

In set two, the two teams were tied again for several points. Much like the first set, Walters State began to find their groove with the set tied at 10 as they scored three straight. Roane State cut it to one at 14-13 and then tied it at 15, but Walters State scored two straight as Mims had a kill.

The lead grew to 20-16 after and led to a Roane State timeout. After the timeout, Haylee Richardson and Campbell had kills to make it 22-16. Campbell added another kill to get to set point, and Walters State closed things out at 25-19.

In the final set, the two teams were deadlocked at six before Walters State got hot and took a 12-7 lead. The lead grew from there as a run that included two Campbell kills and a block, a Davis kill and an Olivia Brown ace made it 17-9.

It was easy sailing from there as the Lady Senators ended things at 25-12.
