HARRIMAN, TN – After a full year off, No.23 Walters State wasted no time getting back into the swing of things in their season opener Tuesday evening, taking down Roane State 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-18,25-21).  

With the win, the Lady Senators improve to 1-0 overall and in the conference. It was Roane State's first volleyball match as a program. 17 of the 18 members on the Walters State team saw playing time tonight.  

"We started off timid tonight, and you could definitely tell we haven't played in 13 months," Walters State volleyball coach Megan Blaylock said. "We tried several rotations tonight, and I'm glad we did. That versatility is going to be a great benefit later in the season."  

It was a quick start for Walters State as they battled point-for-point with Roane State. The Lady Raiders tied the set at 20 late before the Lady Senators reeled off five straight points to take the first set.  

In set number two, it was Roane State who got off to a quick start before Walters State battled back. However, it was the Lady Raiders who would eventually pull ahead and take set number two.  

Motivated after the lost set, the Lady Senators came out firing in set number three, taking command early and never letting go as they cruised to a 25-18 win. Walters State closed the match out with a 25-21 victory in set number four.  

"Our confidence and comfortability increased tremendously in the third and fourth sets," Blaylock said. "Our middles played extremely well tonight, and I hope that they drive our offense all season. While there are a number of things we still need to improve on, I'm very excited about this group. Their energy and love for the game is contagious."  

UP NEXT: 

Walters State will be back in action on Thursday night for their first home match of the season against Chattanooga State. It is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, the Lady Senators will take on the Bob Jones JV team at 5:30 p.m.
