Senators split Saturday games, pick up win over No. 5 Chipola

MARIANNA, Fla. — Walters State bounced back from two losses on Friday, splitting a double-header on Sunday. The No. 3 Senators got revenge, taking down No. 5 Chipola 4-3 in extra innings before falling 8-4 to No. 20 Florida Southwestern State 8-4.

With the split, Walters State goes to 4-3 on the season.

The Senators got a solid effort on the mound from Ben Joyce and Jared Culp. Joyce started the game, throwing three innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out four. Culp (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out six.

After a scoreless first, Parker Stinnett got things going in the second for Walters State, singling in two runs. Chipola took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Senators answered back in the fifth when Jerry Hammons singled home the tying run.

Then, with the game in extras, Michael Robinson came through with single that scored Braydon Runion to give Walters State a 4-3 lead. That proved to be the winning run as Culp shut down Chipola in the bottom of the ninth. Stinnett and Hammons led the team with two hits apiece.

Game two started off well for the Senators as the fourth batter of the game, Matthew Ellis blasted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that put the Senators up 2-0. They extended that lead to 4-0 in the second when Alberto Osuna and Robinson both scored on errors. However, that was all the Senators could muster as they had just four hits in the game.

It was a pitching carousal for the Senators in the game as they sent seven arms to the mound. Luke Person picked up the loss.

Dillon Phillips got the start and threw 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out five. Person got out of the inning, but that was the only out he got, allowing three runs. Tanner Smith, Matt Dailey, Hudson Ross and Sam Sutton combined to make it through the sixth before Andrew Romanoli pitched a scoreless seventh.
