No. 11 Senators sweep Saturday action, down WVU Potomac and USC Sumter

SUMTER, S.C. — Walters State extended their winning streak to five games on Saturday, sweeping a double-header as they took down WVU Potomac State 9-3 and USC Sumter 2-0.

 

With the wins, the No. 11-ranked Senators improve to 10-4 on the year and are winners of six of their last seven games.

 

It was all Bryce Hodge and Seth Gardner in game one against WVU Potomac on the offensive side of the ball. While Hodge didn't record a hit, he did walk once and knocked in two runs, reaching both first both times thanks to errors. Gardner had two hits in the game and knocked in two runs as well. His runs came in the fifth when he singled in two runs to make it a 6-2 game.

 

Along with Hodge and Gardner, Michael Robinson and Logan Hullette knocked in the other two runs. The Senators got the scoring going in the second with two runs before Potomac tied it in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Senators answered in the fifth, scoring four runs to go up 6-2. They added on insurance in the sixth and seventh, scoring a run in both innings.

 

Nolan Letzgus (2-1) got the start on the mound for the Senators, picking up his second win of the year. Letzgus pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out eight. Caleb Pearson pitched the final two innings, striking out three.

 

Game two was a pitchers duel against USC Sumter as Andrew Lindsey (2-1) threw a complete game shutout. Lindsey struck out five and allowed just five hits. Lindsey lowered his ERA to 2.14 with his outing.

 

Offensively, the Senators had six hits in the game. In the top of the fifth, Braydon Runion got the scoring going with his second home run of the year to make it 1-0. Runion had two hits in the game. Hodge knocked in the other run in the top of the seventh when he grounded into a fielders choice.

Walters State will wrap up their trip to Sumter on Sunday when they take on both WVU Potomac State at 10 a.m. and USC Sumter at 1 p.m.
