
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State celebrated Sophomore Day on Friday morning and capped the day off with a 9-6 win over Cleveland State.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 47-6-1 overall and 25-5 in TCCAA play.
The sophomores honored before the game were Jace Kirby, Taylor Harris, Carson Cabbage, Nate Conner, Atticus Goodson, Reilly Byers, Brantley Bamberg, Ryder Moye, Walker Morgan, Riley Franklin, Rowan Park, Gage Peterson, Tyler Peterson, Matthew Porchas, Aiden Robertson, Jack Torbett, Jack Vogele and Tyler Welch.
Leading the way in the game at the plate for the Senators were Bamberg and Cabbage with two hits each and two RBIs. Bamberg homered, as did Tyler Myatt as he slugged his 26th of the season.
On the mound, Gage Peterson got the start and threw 4.1 innings. Peterson allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six. Byers replaced Peterson with an out in the fifth and threw the next 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out two, before Welch struck out two in the seventh inning. Franklin was next in line and pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Park pitched the ninth. Park allowed three runs on two hits and struck out two.
Bamberg got the Senators on the board in the second with an RBI double that scored Cabbage, but Cleveland State put up two runs in the top of the third to grab a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Senators quickly regained control as Kole Fenton scored on an error and Myatt mashed an 0-2 pitch over the fence and trees in right field for a three-run homer that made it 5-2.
The Cougars got a run back in the top of the fourth, but Walters State answered as Bamberg hit a solo home run to make it 6-2. Walters State picked up two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Cabbage and a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Torbett that drove in Harris to make it 9-3. Cleveland State got three runs in the ninth, but that was all.
