Lady Senators take opening pair at Roane State

HARRIMAN, Tenn. — Olivia Wheeler collected four hits, knocked in six runs and hit her second collegiate home run of her career, which happened to be a grand slam, in leading Walters State to a doubleheader sweep of Roane State Friday afternoon in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association softball action.

Wheeler's grand slam was one of several highlights for Coach Larry Sauceman's Lady Senators in an opening 12-0 win, as Wheeler drove in five runs in the contest. In the nightcap, WSCC fell behind early but took the lead for good in the third inning and held on for a 3-2 victory to complete the series opening sweep.

With the wins, Walters State improved to 20-12 on the year and 12-4 in TCCAA play, as the Lady Senators also moved to 11-2 on the year in true road games. WSCC has now outscored its conference opposition 104-57 in 16 league games.

The losses dropped the Lady Raiders to 5-17 overall and 3-11 in TCCAA action. Roane State is now 2-6 at home, including 1-5 in league games, and has been outscored 92-49 in 14 region tilts.

In the opener, Walters State got the scoring started with a solo home run in the second inning from Keeley Quillen, her ninth of the year, and the lead jumped to 3-0 in the third when Kallyn Newport singled and scored on a two-run homer from Taylor McConnell, her third round tripper of the year.

Two more runs came across in the fourth on an error when Emma Seagrave put down a sacrifice bunt, and Wheeler added a sacrifice fly to score Seagrave and pad the margin to 6-0. In the fifth, Seagrave was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Wheeler hammered her grand slam to make it a double-digit lead. Janice Brown later drove in a run with an RBI single for the final run of the game.

Delilah Malczewski (10-5) went the distance inside the circle, allowing nine hits in five innings to get the shutout.

In the nightcap, Roane State took a 1-0 lead after one inning and held the lead until WSCC pushed two runs across in the third and another in the fourth to claim a 3-1 lead. Lauren Brickey made that lead stand up, despite allowing a run in the seventh inning before closing it out to get the win.

Brickey (6-2) went all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits to collect the victory.

Wheeler had three hits with a double in the second game, including an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game before Sydney Dukes added an RBI single of her own to put the Lady Senators on top. Taylor Henson smoked her first collegiate home run in the fourth to pad the lead on what turned out to be the final run of the game for WSCC.

Dukes and Tia Wilson both ended the game with a pair of hits in the victory.

The two teams will close out the four-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
