Coffman’s perfect game highlights Walters State’s sweep of Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, SC – Tori Coffman threw seven perfect innings on Thursday afternoon in game one against Spartanburg Methodist as Walters State swept a doubleheader, 6-0 and 19-3 in five innings. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 12-0 on the season. The Lady Senators have outscored opponents this season, 117-9.

 

GAME ONE: Walters State 6, Spartanburg Methodist 0

 

Coffman has been unbelievable to start the season in the circle for the Lady Senators and that continued on Thursday in game one against Spartanburg Methodist. 

 

Coffman (6-0) threw seven perfect innings in the win, not allowing a hit or walk. Coffman struck out 13 of the 21 batters she faced. 

 

On the season, Coffman has allowed just two runs in 32 innings for an ERA of 0.43. She has struck out 51 batters. 

 

At the plate, Jules Johnson led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Along with Johnson, Abigail Taylor had three hits and an RBI. 

 

After two scoreless innings to start, the Lady Senators got on the board with four runs in the third inning. Johnson started things off with a two-RBI single before a groundout scored Kailey Dixon to make it 3-0. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Brianna Beech

 

Walters State added another run to their lead in the fourth when Taylor doubled to score Ava Brooks, and Tatum Dye tripled in the fifth to score Halle Laramie to make it 6-0.  

 

GAME TWO: Walters State 19, Spartanburg Methodist 3 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Lady Senators exploded at the plate to give the Lady Senators their 12th win of the season. 

 

Jayden Salts led the way at the plate in the game with three hits, driving in five runs as well. Along with Salts, Ava Brooks was 3-3 and drove in two runs while Dixon, Ashlyn Gaines and Johnson had three RBIs each. Brooks, Johnson, Gaines and Abby Davidson all hit home runs. 

 

Ashley Milligan (6-0) got the start in the circle in game two and threw four innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out five. Abigayle Holt replaced Milligan in the fifth and threw a scoreless inning.

 

Following a scoreless first, Walters State scored six runs in the second to break the game open. Brooks started things with a solo home run before Dixon doubled in two runs to make it 3-0. Johnson capped the inning off with a three-run bomb to make it 6-0. 

 

Spartanburg Methodist answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Salts doubled in two and Dixon singled home one in the top of the third to give the Lady Senators a 9-2 lead. 

 

The Lady Senators increased their lead to 14-2 in the fourth as Brooks singled in one, Salts doubled in three runners and then scored on a fielder's choice.

 

Following a run by Spartanburg Methodist in the bottom of the fourth, Gaines pinch hit and blasted a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 17-3 before Davidson pinch hit and blasted a two-run home run that capped off the scoring.

Walters State will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 24, as they begin play in Oxford, AL. The Lady Senators will play two games on Friday at 1 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET and two games on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and 3 p.m. ET.
