Lady Senators softball split doubleheader with Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – No. 4 Walters State run-ruled Dyersburg State in game one on Sunday afternoon before falling in extra innings in game two. The Lady Senators won 11-0 in five innings in game one before falling 2-1 in eight innings in game two. 

 

With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 42-2 on the season and 26-2 in TCCAA play.

 

GAME ONE: No. 4 Walters State 11, Dyersburg State 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, the Lady Senators scored in every inning on their way to the win. 

 

In the circle, Tori Coffman got the start and threw all five innings. Coffman struck out 10 while allowing just two hits. 

 

At the plate, Kasey Bennett, Tatum Dye, Ava Brooks, Sarah King and Abigail Taylor each had two hits. Brooks hit the Lady Senators only homer of the game and drove in four runs. 

 

Things started early for the Lady Senators as they picked up a run in the top of the first to make it 1-0. That run came on an error that allowed Bennett to score. 

 

In the second, three more runs came across to make it 4-0 as King singled home Brianna Beech and Bennett singled home King and Taylor. 

 

Following two more runs in the third on a Brooks RBI single and Taylor RBI single that made it 6-0, Walters State broke the game open with four more runs in the fourth. Those runs came on an error that scored Dye and a three-run blast from Brooks that made it 10-0.

 

The final run came in the fifth on a Dye RBI single. 

 

GAME TWO: Dyersburg State 2, No. 4 Walters State 1 (8 Innings)

 

In game two, the Lady Senators scored in the second inning but could not get another run across as Dyersburg walked it off in the eighth. 

 

Ashley Milligan got the start in the circle and threw six innings. Milligan struck out 12 while allowing just one run. 

 

Coffman entered in the seventh and got through her first inning of work but could only get an out in the eighth. 

 

At the plate, Laramie and King had two hits each while Beech smacked a solo homer in the second for Walters State's only run of the game. 

 

Following Beech's home run, Dyersburg tied the game in the fifth and then won the game in the eighth on a play at the plate.

Walters State will be back in action on Monday for two more games against Dyersburg State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
