DALLAS, NC – No. 6 Walters State split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with Gaston College, taking a 10-2 win in game one before falling 5-1 in game two.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 23-3 on the season.
GAME ONE: No. 6 Walters State 10, Gaston College 2 (6 Innings)
In game one, Walters State scored nine runs in the first four innings and cruised from there for the six-inning win.
Jules Johnson led the way at the plate for Walters State with two home runs and four RBI. Kailey Dixon had a home run and three RBI, as well.
Tori Coffman (15-1) got the start in the circle for the Lady Senators and threw all six innings. Coffman gave up two runs on two hits and struck out four.
Johnson got the party started for Walters State in the top of the first, mashing a two-run homer. Gaston hit their own two-run homer in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Senators broke away with four runs in the second. Those runs came on an RBI single by Dixon, a Nora Mack groundout that scored Brooklyn Copley, a Johnson groundout that scored Abigail Taylor and a Haidyn Campbell RBI single that made it 6-2.
Walters State added two more runs in the third on a Dixon two-run homer and a run in the fourth on an Imari Golden RBI single that made it 9-2.
The final run of the game came in the top of the sixth, as Johnson hit her second home run of the day to make it 10-2.
GAME TWO: Gaston College 5, No. 6 Walters State 1
In game two, Walters State could not get the bats going in the loss.
At the plate, Golden and Olivia Neese led the way with two hits each. Nora Mack had the Lady Senators' other hit.
In the circle, Hayley Lawing (7-1) got the start and threw 3.1 innings. Lawing gave up five runs on four hits while striking out two. Makayla Ramsey replaced Lawing with one out in the fourth and pitched the final 2.2 innings. Ramsey allowed no runs on two hits.
Walters State got on the board first in game two, as Mack walked with the bases loaded to score Neese in the top of the second.
Unfortunately for the Lady Senators though, Gaston scored three in the bottom of the second and two in the fourth to take the win.
Up Next:
Walters State is scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday at home against Roane State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., weather permitting.
