No. 8 Walters State picks up doubleheader sweep over Georgia Highlands

ROME, GA – No. 8 Walters State combined for 30 runs over two games on Friday afternoon against Georgia Highlands, taking a doubleheader sweep. The Lady Senators grabbed an 8-0 win in game one and a 22-6 win in game two. 

 

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 4-0 on the season.

 

GAME ONE: No. 8 Walters State 8, Georgia Highlands 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Tori Coffman allowed just one hit while striking out 12 as the Lady Senators cruised to the win. 

 

Coffman picked up her second win of the season in the circle. Coffman struck out the side in the first three innings.

 

At the plate, Kailey Dixon had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Jules Johnson drove in three runs, as well. 

 

The Lady Senators got on the board in the top of the first to start things off, as Haidyn Campbell singled to score Johnson. The Lady Senators added three more to their lead in the second, as Brooklyn Copley drove in Abigail Taylor and Johnson hit a line drive that scored Copley and Dixon to make it 4-0.

 

Following a scoreless third, Dixon got the Lady Senators going again as she tripled home Olivia Neece to make it 5-0. Dixon would score two batters later on a Johnson sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. 

 

The final two runs for Walters State came in the top of the fifth, as Copley scored on a bad throw and Dixon scored on a fumbled grounder. 

 

Coffman struck out two in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.

 

GAME TWO: No. 8 Walters State 22, Georgia Highlands 6 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, Walters State dominated from start to finish on their way to the win.

 

Nora Mack was the star at the plate in game two, driving in three runs on two doubles and a single. Coffman drove in four runs, as well, while Copley and Alex Blanton each had two RBI. 

 

In the circle, Haley Lawing got the start and threw 1.1 innings. Lawing was replaced with an out in the second by Emma Myatt, who picked up the win. Myatt threw 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

 

Makayla Ramsey pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on two hits.

 

Walters State started it off in the first with three runs, as Mack doubled home Dixon and Johnson and Campbell doubled in Mack to make it 3-0.

 

The Lady Senators kept the foot on the gas in the second, adding four more runs to make it 7-0. Dixon started things off with an RBI triple and then scored on a passed ball. The final two runs came on a Coffman single that scored Mack and Johnson. 

 

Georgia Highlands added three in the bottom half of the inning, but six crossed the plate for Walters State in the top of the third to make it 13-3. Those runs all came with two outs and came on a Mack RBI single, a Coffman two-RBI single, a Taylor infield single that scored Campbell and a Copley triple that scored Coffman and Taylor. 

 

The Lady Senators failed to score in the fourth but exploded again in the top of the fifth for nine more runs to make it 22-3. Those runs came courtesy of a Blanton RBI single, a Neece RBI single, a Jaelyn McDaniel RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI by Emma Keck, another bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly by Kendal Mason, an RBI single by Abby Davidson and a Blanton double.

 

Georgia Highlands added three runs in the bottom half of the inning but it was too late.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday, February 16, in Gulf Shores. The Lady Senators will play Southern Union State at 10 a.m. ET and Coastal Alabama-South at 12:15 p.m. ET.
