Lady Senators grab 30th win of the season with sweep of Southwest Tennessee

Lady Senators grab 30th win of the season with sweep of Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 4 Walters State played games 29 and 30 of the season on Saturday afternoon.

And they still have yet to have a one replace the zero in the loss column.

Taking on Southwest Tennessee, the Lady Senators scored 18 runs over two games and limited the Lady Saluqis to one. Walters State took a 9-1 win in game one and finished things off with a 9-0 win in game two.

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 30-0 on the season and 16-0 in TCCAA play.

"I knew we had a really good team coming in but to be 30-0 right now is incredible," Walters State pitcher Ashley Milligan said. "We just have to keep it going."

GAME ONE: No. 4 Walters State 9, Southwest Tennessee 1 (5 Innings)

In game one, the Lady Senators scored eight runs in the first two innings and cruised to the win.

At the plate, Halle Laramie and Jules Johnson each hit home runs. Johnson knocked in four runs, while Laramie knocked in three.

In the circle, Tori Coffman (16-0) got the start and threw four innings. Coffman allowed three hits while striking out six. Adrienne Morrison replaced Coffman in the fifth and threw an inning, allowing one run on three hits.

Walters State started things off early in game one as Johnson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kailey Dixon and Laramie blasted a three-run homer that made it 4-0. It was Laramie's ninth home run of the season.

One final run came across in the first for the Lady Senators as Sarah King hit a sac fly that scored Brianna Beech to make it 5-0.

In the second, Johnson hit her 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot, that made it 7-0. The final run of the inning came as Laramie singled in Tatum Dye.

From there, Southwest got one run in the top of the fifth but a bases-loaded walk to Johnson in the bottom half ended the game.

GAME TWO: No. 4 Walters State 9, Southwest Tennessee 0 (5 Innings)

In game two, Milligan (14-0) put together her second complete game shutout of the weekend to finish off the sweep.

During her five innings in the circle, Milligan allowed just two hits while striking out seven.

"That curveball was really on it," Milligan said. "I have had a few rough starts recently, so today was just me getting back to the Ashley of last year."

At the plate, Dye led the way with three hits while King drove home three runs. Laramie also knocked in two runs.

Walters State got a run in the first on a Johnson RBI single and then scored eight in the third to blow the game open. The scoring wasn't the Lady Senators typical barrage of home runs either as Laramie bunted in a run, King doubled in three runs, Dixon scored King on a sacrifice bunt, Dye singled in Kasey Bennett and Laramie doubled in two to make it 9-0.

"I think it was really good for us to not have to rely on home runs and instead drop down some bunts and hit it all over," Milligan said. "Everything just worked really well this weekend, especially today."

Up Next:

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Southwest Virginia for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

"We don't really need to change anything but just keep the mindset we have and keep working towards our main goal, which is Oxford, AL and that national tournament," Milligan said.
