Walters State fall in opening game of TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Finals

GALLATIN, TN – Walters State got on the board first in Monday's TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Finals opening matchup against host Volunteer State but a five-run fourth inning was too much to overcome as the Lady Senators fell, 6-2.

With the loss, Walters State will take on Dyersburg at 4 p.m tomorrow in an elimination game. Dyersburg lost 2-0 to Chattanooga State on Monday afternoon.

Walters State was led in the game by Kasey Bennett who had two hits, including a home run in the top of the sixth inning. Along with Bennett, Lauren Brickey scored the Lady Senators other run with a solo home run in the second that put them ahead early.

Jessica Campbell, Sydney Dukes and Olivia Wheeler each had hits as well.

After a scoreless first inning, Brickey got the scoring going with a solo home run, her 11th of the season.

Vol State would respond, however, as the Lady Pioneers scored five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Trying to fight back into it, Bennett cut the lead to three as she hammered a solo home run. Unfortunately for Walters State, Vol State added a run in the sixth and shut the Lady Senators down in the seventh for the win.

In the circle, Walters State's Brickey got the start and pitched the entirety of the contest. Brickey allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits and struck out five.
